Cancer remains the number one cause of death in dogs and cats throughout the United States and therefore is something that all veterinarians must manage in their daily practice. Like most phases of veterinary medicine, the field of oncology continues to undergo rapid evolution with regard to technological advances in diagnostic and therapeutic options available for our companion animals.
In 2012, an exciting change occurred in the realm of surgical care for our veterinary cancer patients. The American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) formally established credentialing for advanced training in the field of surgical cancer care. This opportunity allows for interested surgeons to gain additional training and experience in the multidisciplinary approach to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of cancer patients beyond ACVS surgery residency training, and devote a major portion of his or her professional practice to these activities and/or cancer research.
