Neurology

Our residency-trained neurologist, Dr. Adam Schneider, is here to help you manage your pet’s neurological disease affecting the brain, spinal cord, and neuromuscular system. The neurology service at SVS offers the most advanced diagnostics such as MRI and CT scans, as well as cutting edge technology to treat your pet. We also offer EMG (electromyography) and NCV (nerve conduction velocity) studies, as well as CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) analysis as diagnostics for various neurologic disorders.

Some common disorders and diseases managed at SVS:

  • Epilepsy
  • Vestibular disease
  • Infectious brain diseases (tick-borne diseases, protozoal, viral, fungal, bacterial)
  • Meningoencephalitis of unknown etiology (MUE)
  • Cerebrovascular accident (stroke)
  • Spinal cord disorders (fibrocartilaginous embolism, degenerative myelopathy, discospondylitis)
  • Neuromuscular diseases (myasthenia gravis, masticatory muscle myositis)

Neurosurgery

In addition to medical management of brain diseases, Dr. Schneider can offer surgical intervention for congenital disorders and tumors.

  • Ventricular shunts (Hydrocephalus)
  • Caudal Ocipital Malformation Syndrome (COMS)
  • Brain tumors (meningioma, glioma)
  • Spinal tumors (meningioma)
  • Subarachnoid diverticulum

Together with our surgeon (Dr. Eisele), we can treat a variety of other spinal conditions.

  • Intervertebral disc extrusion/protrusions
  • Spinal stabilizations for fractures, luxations (atlantoaxial luxation/subluxation), and instability (caudal cervical spondylomyelopathy, dynamic lumbosacral stenosis)

SVS also offers physical rehabilitation which can greatly aid in the recovery of spinal injuries.

Spinal Surgery at SVS:

Hemilaminectomy for decompression of the spinal cord after intervertebral disc extrusion.
Spinal stabilization to treat fractures, spinal luxations or chronic spinal instability.
Chronic lumbar spinal instability can be found in some working breeds like the German Shepherd dog.
